Toowoomba Regional Council Depot
Pierlite’s intelligent lighting solutions have helped build a safe and sustainable state-of-the-art depot in Charlton, Queensland.
Located in Melbourne’s north, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s $109m specialised emergency services learning and training college at Craigieburn is a world class training facility, with a fundamental focus on practical training, flexibility, innovation and technology.
The academic building combines classroom based learning with simulated scenarios, comprising structures and props laid out in an urban streetscape environment, including laneways, rail tunnels and tram stops. The facility is also available as a resource for other emergency service organisations to supplement their training programs.
Award-winning architects Woods Bagot led the design team, with engineering consultants Umow Lai & Associates and Leighton Contractors to construct the facility. The Electrical Contractor was Eascom Electrical.
Pierlite was appointed to supply internal and external luminaires, as well as provide lighting design services and on-site support. Part of our role was to ensure all lighting met the strict efficiency and functional requirements of the project. This involved considerable presence on-site as well as liaising with design services.
Our recommendations included both Pierlite specified fittings and an alternative package to meet energy efficiency targets that were an important design constraint. The light levels needed to be deemed suitable for purpose as outlined in the construction brief.
Sample review meetings were conducted with architects, engineers and builders as part of the process towards recommendation approval. Pierlite also provided design support with detailed light level and power efficiency calculations.
All internal lights were controlled by a DALI network to maximise efficiency. These areas included hazardous zones, offices, teaching areas and live external props where students conduct simulated drills from a working fire station on site. Pierlite solved installation challenges as they arose, offering solutions to specific lighting problems.
Externally, Disano Olympic floodlights were installed for the parade ground. Disano Stelvio and Brera illuminate the carparks and internal roads, and Pierlite Trace LED and Floor Uplighters help to illuminate the building facade.
Internally, DOT LED downlights, IRIS architectural battens, Futcha 5 and Fusion troffers, CSC HAZ luminaires, LEO LED highbays and Austube linear lights were selected and installed.
Alongside the work produced for the Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre, Pierlite was commissioned to design the specialised lighting for the indoor Police Training Range right next door, in partnership with Safe-Shot.
